The law of reciprocity, as elaborated on in the book “Influence” by Dr Robert Cialdini, is one of the most fundamental principles in both marketing and business.
I’ve used it frequently throughout the last fifteen years running agencies and online businesses to develop a huge network of influential business people and close high-ticket sales.
Here’s a few examples from when I ran my own agency:
- My goal with every client was to give them 10x the value of what they paid me. So if they were paying $500 a month, I’d go to the drawing board and list out ideas to give them back $5000 in value. What is profitable for customers, is profitable for you…
- My “initial offer” when approaching new prospects was to offer them a list of “1,000 leads” in their target niche – with contact details, emails, everything. This was a great way to start the conversation (businesses grow from conversations), and lead them to the next step of actually helping them nurture all of those leads.
- Instead of offering new clients a “free trial” I offered each new agency lead two months for the price of one – this helped make it easy for them to sign up, give them more to benefit from my service (and encourage them to stay on), and also protect my business from time-wasters and tire-kickers who didn’t’ want to spend.
At one point, in 2019, I was running automation campaigns for more than 70 clients, using these exact principles to gain and retain loyal clientele.
